DJing a wedding reception using an iPod | Archies Blog #1

“Ok, we need a blog!”, they say. “We want a blog” they say. “Archie! You can do a blog!” they say.

Well, thanks guys, it’s bad enough that I’m stuck on this planet, NOW I have to write for you people too!

I went to a wedding recently, and was watching the way that the DJ interacted with the guests during the reception. Then I got to thinking (as I do), about how there is a BIG difference between hiring a DJ, and using an I-Pod.

The advantage of using a DJ is simple. They interact with your guests; they usually have a vast amount of experience in dealing with all manner of people. They can usually read a crowd, and determine what will keep them on the dance floor. They will also play what you want them to play, and if they don’t have it, they can usually find it. If you want rock, they will play you rock, if you want classical, they will play you classical. Whatever you want, they will find it for you.

Choosing a DJ is like hiring an employee. There are many different types, and you need to find the one that works for you, the one who will work with you. Obviously, if you want Hip Hop, then you need to do your research, and find one who is more experienced with that genre of music than one who is only experienced with the 80’s.

One way of discovering who is good for you is by asking to see a sample of their music. Just like your wedding day, they work for you, and should be ready to play what you want. They can make suggestions, but in the end, the final decision is yours.

One of the most important advantages (and overlooked aspects), is liability. When you hire a professional DJ, they provide their own equipment, and hopefully (if they are professional), their equipment is insured. If one of their speakers falls over, the professional dj is insured, and therefore, will take care of that for you.

You hire a dj to make your life easier. So that you can enjoy your special day without the hassle of who will choose what song and when. Let’s see you do THAT with an IPod.

Love,
Archie
